What are Search Refinements?
Each website added to our indexed will be "labelled" as a certain type of website. The labels help us identify what kind of content the website brings to our search results. A website will be labelled as one or more of the following,
for Business - Company websites with the objective to attract business by selling product or service. This is a business directory label.
for Information - Informative websites such as city guides, Government websites, movie listings and city attraction websites. (Example toronto.ca, cntower.ca)
for Articles - News type websites that mainly include articles. (Example thestar.com, theglobeandmail.com, torontosun.com)
for Entertainment - Media type websites similar to TV and Radio. (Example muchmusic.com, flow935.com, citytv.com/toronto/)
for Shopping - Websites that include shopping carts for buying products online. (Example bestbuy.ca, futureshop.ca)
for Fun - Website that don't fit in any of the above labels such as Personal Blogs, Games and Forums. (Example blogto.com, funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/Toronto-Neighbourhoods-94071.html)
How are these Labels useful?
These refinement labels allow you to sort your search by the type of information you are looking for. For example if you did a search on "Weddings" the normal search results will show. However if you click on each of the refinement links, the results would be sorted accordingly. Here is an example of what might show up for each refinement for the term "Weddings".
"for Business" would
show businesses in Toronto involved with weddings such as banquet halls, wedding planners etc.
"for Information" would show you helpful informative sites such as guides that revolve around weddings
"for Articles" would show news articles that are associated with weddings
"for Entertainment " would show entertainment related websites that involve weddings such as TV movies that are about weddings
"for Shopping" would show you wedding related products that you can purchase online from a local Toronto buisness
"for Fun" would show you blogs, forums and fun sites that relate to the search term weddings
With refinements you are able to get several different results for 1 search and target what you are looking for.
Where do the Refinement Labels appear?
Refinement labels appear above the search results. Clicking on one of the labels will automatically rearrange your results accordingly.
