The annual Toronto Caribbean Carnival (Caribana) Festival which has been running annually since 1967, blazes with the excitement of calypso, steel pan, elaborate masquerade costumes, carnival traditions and music of many Caribbean nations including in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Brazil, Barbados, Guyana and all West Indian nations. If you love soca, calypso or reggae music then Caribana is where you need to be!

While Caribana runs for two weeks, the highlight of the Caribana event is the final weekend where everybody comes together in the street Parade of Bands. During the parade thousands of brilliantly costumed masqueraders and dozens of trucks carrying live artists playing pulsating rhythms and melodies of Calypso, Soca, Reggae, Hip Hop, Chutney, Steel Pan, Brass Bands and Salsa jam the 1.5 km parade route all day, to the delight of hundreds of thousands of onlookers.

The final parade usually coincides with the Civic holiday weekend in Ontario, which falls on the first monday of August. The Caribana events are planned months in advance while the costumes and bad displays are elaborate and delicately designed for movement.

The Taste of the Danforth is held every year in the month of August and is one of Canada’s largest street festival welcoming over 1 million people. Toronto’s favourite street festival is a weekend event that runs for 3 days and celebrates the fun and flavours of Greece.

The Greater Toronto Area lays claim to more than 200,000 residents of Greek ancestry, the third largest Hellenic community outside of Greece. The Taste of the Danforth festival is in the heart of Toronto’s GreekTown, and attracts hungry mouths from all over the world for this renowned street festival. They come for the food, the entertainment, the atmosphere, and to be Greek for the weekend!

While the festival is running, Danforth Avenue between Broadview and Jones is closed to traffic, where over 15 blocks and over 2.5km of food, fun, entertainment and unique experiences are offered. Thousands of people walk the streets of Greektown where several restaurants setup cooking stations and patios outside. The Taste of the Danforth offers quality food at cheap prices, musical performances, dancers and several other forms of fun and entertainment while you walk up and down the streets enjoying the summer weather.

The Taste of the Danforth was modeled after Chicago’s street festival, The Taste of Chicago. The festival first started in 1994 where it drew an attendance of 5000 people. In 1995, the festival jumped to 100,000 attendees and by 1996 the Taste of the Danforth was so large that the Danforth street had to officially close for the festival to accommodate over 500,000 visitors!

About Greektown

GreekTown is located roughly between Chester and Jones Ave on Danforth Ave. Over 450 businesses are situated in this area and each contributes financially to the promotion and beautification of the community.

In the early 1970’s, Canada welcomed thousands of Greek citizens. Many members of the community made their way to the Danforth. GreekTown on the Danforth is the largest Hellenic business community in North America and indeed is the third largest in the world after Greece and Melbourne, Australia. In 1994, the Taste of the Danforth was created making it the largest Greek festival in the world outside of Greece.

Hours of the Festival

Friday: Starts at 6pm
Saturday: Starts at 11am
Sunday: Starts at 11am

The festival goes on until restaurants close or everybody goes home!

Directions and Map to the Taste of the Danforth

By Car

Greektown on Danforth is a few minutes east of the Don Valley Parkway, also called the DVP, which connects with the QEW Gardiner Expressway to the south and the 401 highway to the north. Once on the Don Valley Parkway, take the Bayview/Bloor exit, follow the signs for Bloor Street/Danforth Avenue and then travel eastbound.

By Public Transit – TTC

The Taste of the Danforth takes place along Danforth Avenue which is conveniently located on the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC’s) Bloor-Danforth Subway line. The event can be accessed through any of our four subway stations, Broadview, Chester, Pape and Donlands.

Please call (416)393-INFO(4636) for Schedule and fare information.

By Go Transit or Train

Union Station is the central hub of the GO system as well as VIA Rail Train System and from here you can hop on the TTC to get to the Taste of the Danforth easily by subway.

Parking

During the frestival Danforth Avenue (from Broadview to Jones Avenues) is closed to all vehicular traffic making parking more of a challenge.

There are a number of municipal public parking lots (all with Handicapped parking spaces) located within one block north and south of Danforth Avenue (Specific parking lot locations are shown on the area map.)

Parking on residential side streets during the Taste of the Danforth is extremely limited and illegally parked vehicles are vigilantly tagged and towed away.

Taking public transit is the easiest and stress free way to the festival.

Beerfest is held annually in August and usually falls on the same weekend as the Taste of the Danforth street festival. This event used to be held on the historic Fort York grounds however the festival is now located at the Exhibition grounds in Bandshell Park.

You need a ticket to enter the beer festival which runs the entire weekend. Tickets are $40, which includes entrance and 5 beer tokens to start you off. Extra tokens are $1 each, with one token getting you 4 oz of any beer of your choice. Tickets may be purchased online or at any beer store.

Beyond all the beer guzzling, the Toronto Beer Festival also hosts several music bands every year. Another fun activity is down by the Steamwhistle tents where you can get a box made into a hat depicting anything from a plane to a Mohawk.

The first Toronto Beer festival was held in 1995, and since then its popularity has grown significantly attracting people from all over southern Ontario. If you plan on attending the Beer Festival it is recommended to purchase a ticket in advance as the festival could have limited tickets closer to the event date.

Beer Festival Prices

Ticket Prices are $40 – $50
Extra Tokens are $1 each

The skinny: You need to buy a $40 ticket to enter the Beer Festival. This ticket allows you entrance into the festival where you will be given a cup to keep throughout the day. You will also be given 5 beer tokens which will allow you to drink from any beer stand. The cost of a full cup is 2 tokens and the cost of half a cup is 1 token.

Tip: Your tokens will last longer if you only get a ?half? cup. If you really like a beer, you are better off getting 2 half cups then 1 ?full? cup. From our experiences this results in more beer!

Hours of the Event

The Scotiabank Nuit Blanche event is an annual all night arts festival that is held in early October. For one night, the familiar will be discarded as the city becomes the artistic playground for a series of exhilarating contemporary art experiences.

Highlights of the Nuit Blanche all night festival are museums, private and public art galleries, and other cultural institutions open and free of charge, with the city of Toronto itself being turned into a de facto art gallery, providing space for art installations, performances (music, film, dance, performance art), themed social gatherings, and other activities.

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche was a uniquely Toronto adaptation of the highly successful Paris event first created by the City of Paris in 2002. Paris organizers contacted the City of Toronto’s Special Events office with an invitation to join the ranks of approximately six other international cities producing similar all-night events. The international success of Nuit Blanche continues to build each year, with celebrations being held in more and more cities.

Event Date and Hours

Starts from sunset at 6:55 pm
Ends 12 hours later at Sunrise the very next day

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche is traditionally run for 1 night only sometime in late September or Early October.

Directions and Map to Scotiabank Nuit Blanche

The Scotiabank Nuit Blanche festival celebrates art exhibits all over downtown Toronto. Be sure to take some time to plan your route in advance. Avoid driving downtown and take advantage of these easy and affordable ways to get to and through the event.

On Foot

Several exhibition projects are close and walkable so you can see more in less time. To reduce congestion and provide more space for pedestrians, road closures are common.

By Bike

Cycling is a great way to see as many projects across the city as possible.

By Public Transit

The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) is the quick and convenient way to get around the city 24 hours a day. Here are a few pointers to help you get to and from the 3 event Zones.

All-night service

Normally the Subway / Rapid Transit runs on Saturday nights until approximately 1:30 am, and Sunday service starts again at approximately 9:00 am. Specifically for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche the TTC offers all-night service to a portion of the subway line.

The Bloor-Danforth subway runs all night from Keele to Woodbine and the Yonge-University subway runs all night from St Clair West to Eglinton.

The 509 Harbourfront Streetcar is extended overnight to shuttle audiences directly to and from Union Station (Zone B) and Liberty Village (Zone C) in the city’s west end.

In addition to the regular all-night Blue Night Network service, increased all-night service is usually offered on:

300 BLOOR-DANFORTH all-night bus route to Kipling, Warden and Kennedy commuter parking lots.

320 YONGE all-night bus route to the Finch parking lot.

SPADINA SUBWAY shuttle bus from St Clair West Station to Yorkdale, Wilson and Downsview lots.

Recommended Routes between Zones

Most projects in Zones A & B are accessible by the Yonge-University subway.

Use the 509 Harbourfront Streetcar to shuttle between Zone C and Zone B.

All Night Day Pass

The Scotiabank Nuit Blanche TTC Day Pass allows a single customer or a family/group of customers (up to 6 people, maximum 2 adults and 4 children/youths, 19 years of age or under) to pay one low price for unlimited travel on all regular TTC service. For Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, the TTC Day Pass is valid from the start of service on Saturday, October 3, until 9 am on Sunday, October 4. Day Passes are available at all subway stations starting September 8, at a cost of $9.

Parking

In Zone C park at Exhibition Place. From there you can walk to Zone C, or ride the Harbourfront Streetcar Rapid Transit to Union Station where you can easily get to Zone B or A.

Look for Green P pay parking lot locations near any of the all-night subway stations.

If you park at a TTC Commuter Parking lot beyond the all-night stations, after 1:30am you’ll need to transfer to the TTC’s shuttle buses to get back to your car.

The Cavalcade of Lights was created in 1967 to showcase Toronto’s newly constructed City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. The festival is a month long holiday celebration that traditionally falls on the final weekend of November to kick-off the holiday season and runs through to December.

When the event was first introduced, it was only a one day gathering. Since 2002, the Cavalcade of Lights has turned into a month long festival starting with the official illumination of the Square and giant Christmas tree with over 300,000 festive lights!

Along with the lightning of Toronto?s official Christmas tree, the Cavalcade of Lights festival also offers, fireworks, live musical performances and Saturday night skating parties to live music at Nathan Phillips Square’s famous outdoor rink.

Beyond Nathan Phillips Square, the Cavalcade of Lights festival spans city wide, illuminating neighbourhoods and tourist attractions across Toronto.

Cavalcade of Lights Hours

Starting from the final weekend of November to and through to December, the festivals peak hours are Saturdays at 7:00pm when all the live musical performance, fireworks and skating parties start.

The prices during the Winterlicious food festival range from $15, $20 or $30 for lunch and $25, $35 or $45 for dinner, with drinks and gratuity being extra.

This food festival promotion originally began in 2003 with 35 participating restaurants. The event was created to boost restaurant business in Toronto during a typically slow time of year. Winterlicious also helped Toronto recover from the tourism decline in 2003 that occurred from the SARS outbreak.

Summerlicious is a similar event that runs during the summer days of July. Both events have grown rapidly since they were first introduced in 2003. By 2009, Winterlicious had 150 participating restaurants.

The special events department of Toronto runs Winterlicious and selects which restaurants are allowed to participate. There are several standards each restaurant must meet if they are to be considered as part of the festival. Some of the requirements are certain pricing keeping with festival standards, a clean health inspection record, and good reviews from prominent Toronto restaurant review guides. Restaurant chains are normally only allowed to submit one location for consideration.

Winterlicious Prices

Participating Toronto?s restaurants offer three-course prix fixe menus at one of three price point categories:

$15 Lunch and/or $25 Dinner

$20 Lunch and/or $35 Dinner

$25 Lunch and/or $45 Dinner
