Muzik Nightclub is one of the nicest places I have been to for many reasons. I was invited to a friend’s birthday celebration at Muzik, and having never been there, I didn’t know what to expect. I was told it was the best place to go party in Toronto, so we all got dressed up and headed out. Once we arrived to the club I thought my eyes were tricking my brain, it looked like something out of a Hollywood movie. Rose red carpet, burgundy velvet ropes, security guards in tuxedos, hostesses in sequence outfits, and that was just the outside.

The architectural and interior design of the place reflects style, class and elegance. All the employees, ranging from the waitresses, to the bartenders and bathroom keepers were impeccably dressed. The service these fine fitted people provided was one of a kind, not only was the staff attentive, but exceptional. During my visit to Muzik Nightclub, the hostess escorted our party to the table we had reserved, and our waitress immediately followed her departure. She nicely took our order and didn’t forget to check on our needs. And the washroom attendant was friendly and didn’t make you feel pressured to tip.

The music at Muzik was typical of nightclubs, loud, upbeat, and fun. I did not witness a shortage of young, professional, attractive men and women at this club. It seemed like everyone there partied their Saturday nights away, while looking their Sunday best. I would frequent this club again.

If you are planning on visiting Muzik Nightclub, you can expect all that I have just mentioned. Other than that, here are a couple of tips: fellas, make sure you bring your wallets-bottle service can get pricey. As for the ladies, I know high heels compliment those cute little dresses we all love wearing, but consider how your feet will feel after hours of dancing, either bring back up or go in flats! Trust me; you will enjoy yourselves a whole lot more if your feet are happy.

Now that you have read my thoughts, what were some of your experiences at Muzik Nightclub?

When I think of large cities, I automatically reference a landmark of that said place. For example, when I think of Chicago, I picture the John Hancock building, or the Willis Tower (formally known as the Sears Tower). If a French word catches my ear, the Eiffel Tower lights up in my brain, London: Big Ben, New York: the Statue of Liberty, etc.The point that I am trying to make here is that whenever I reflect on the beautiful city of Toronto, I imagine the CN Tower. Soaring at a height of 553.33 m (1,815 ft, 5 inches) ,the CN tower to me is the famous Toronto landmark.

Although residents of Toronto may not visit the CN Tower often, it is a huge tourist attraction. The building elevates to various levels, each featuring a different focal point. The breathtaking view at the Look Out Level, which is at a height of 346m (1,136’) is a perfect place to take pictures. Snapshots on the Glass Floor will definitely find a place in the family photo album as well. The Sky Pod at the 447 metre (1465 ft.) level contributes a clear 360 degree view of Toronto, Lake Ontario, and close districts. The charm of the famous Toronto landmark doesn’t stop on these levels of the CN Tower.

Plenty of stores, cafes, bars and restaurants are scattered inside the building as well. Although the time it takes for the 360 Restaurant to revolve once is only 72 minutes that time can be better spent elsewhere in the building. Having dined at the 360 Restaurant the night my husband proposed to me would have been spectacular, considering the view, the layout and the décor of the place. However, the food didn’t surpass the standards I had put on such a lovely place. My advice would be to have dinner at home, and go to the bar in the CN Tower instead. The terrible dinner will not be the deal breaker, nor will it change my perceptions of this famous Toronto landmark. Hopefully, the chefs would reconsider their set of choices, adding some entrees with ingredients that actually complement one another. And if they do happen to take my recommendation, adding some Vegetarian options can only escalate a new menu. Nevertheless, the CN Tower still has a lot to offer and is a place that is very dear to me, and a must see for visitors.

Here are some pictures I took of the CN Tower

Going to a wedding, ball or other special event? Tired of doing helpless laps around malls searching for the perfect dress? Wish you knew of a place where you are confident in finding a form flattering frock? Now you do! It’s called Bella Couture boutique, located just outside of Toronto at 3255 Rutherford Rd. in Thornhill.

This beautiful boutique boasts bountiful dresses in bold or pastel colors, prints and solids, tea length to floor length, A-Line to empire waist and plenty more. The owner Naila Younan is dedicated to helping mothers of the bride or groom, bridesmaids, flower girls, or any girl who enters the boutique to find a unique dress which will be sure to impress.

For my engagement party, I knew I wanted a special dress, and since I was going back and forth from Chicago to Toronto, I didn’t have much time to spend. I skipped all the department stores and malls and opted to go straight to Bella Couture. Naila was very patient and showed me so many options to choose from, pulling dresses from the back that hadn’t yet made it to the front of the boutique. I ultimately went with this dress:

It was like nothing I had ever seen before, on the hanger and on me! The beading and detail was intricate and attractive, and I only needed minor alterations. (By the way, the seamstress at this boutique works magic).

Though, if you are more of a plain Jane and prefer simple styles, you will also stumble upon an immense selection of dresses. Fabrics from satin to chiffon flow freely on the racks and mannequins. So, now that you know where to look, what is stopping you? Go to Bella Couture boutique and show me what you found!

Getting married in Toronto? Here are 3 Wedding Centerpiece Tips to think about!

Related posts:

Bellagio Boutique Event Venue – Vaughan

If you are getting married in Toronto, (or anywhere else) and have started to look for wedding centerpieces, keep doing that. While you are gathering information, think outside of the box. Many brides who plan their own weddings pick floral arrangements as their centerpiece. That idea isn’t a wrong or bad one. Though, you can select something out of the ordinary as there are many alternatives to chose from. Doing this can also help you save money.

Wedding Centerpiece Tip #1 – Browse

I suggest you do some research. The more exposure you have to weddings helps, if you have been to a lot of weddings and grasped ideas, nice. If not, go to wedding websites and browse some through some pictures of other weddings.

Wedding Centerpiece Tip #2 – Think outside the box

Think about what you like, dislike, what you could go without and what you must have. I have been to a countless number of weddings and usually I see centerpieces that look like this: floral arrangement, mainly in white, surrounded by tea lights and either flat on the table or elevated by a glass vase.

Although I love fresh flowers, and candles, I chose to use a lantern as the centerpiece at my wedding in Chicago. The theme throughout was “Let Love Light the Way.” So not only did the centerpiece correlate with the wedding invitations, (and all paper materials such as the table numbers and escort cards), but it made such an impact on my guests. During dinner, the band announced that the person on the table whose birthday was closest to that day would get to keep the centerpiece. I will admit I caught some people on the video stealing centerpieces off of another table!

Wedding Centerpiece Tip #3 – Save money

I found this centerpiece online, the cost of it varies from website to website, but I paid $10 for each one ($5 for the lantern itself and $5 for shipping each). After the glass was easily assembled in all the panels, I threw in a little tea light, which I got on sale for 35 cents each. I had my florist sprinkle some rose petals around it, and the banquet hall provided additional tea lights to further illuminate. That being said, each centerpiece cost roughly around $12. Compare that to roughly $70 for fresh flowers, and you will find you can fund further aspects of your wedding with the savings.

Moving to Toronto only meant one thing, another wedding, right? Yup. The centerpiece for the second reception wasn’t flowers either. It did however; include a candle, in a very beautiful mosaic tiled glass vase in gold accents. One lucky person at each table had a sticker under a small plate; they got to take home this centerpiece:

Unfortunately, fresh flowers die. Selecting a unique centerpiece is a good opportunity to add emphasis to the table. So why not display a centerpiece that can last years and most likely save you money?

If you like feeling like a sardine, then by all means, Brassaii Lounge might be for you. However, if you like going to a place where you can actually dance without being bumped into, by what it feels like a billion people, then you should just skip Brassaii. It is located in a very trendy neighborhood, at 461 King St. W. in Toronto, but I am sure there are better spots to spend Saturday nights at.

I went there last Saturday night with a group of 13 people for a friend’s birthday. I was excited about going to this place after hearing about it, and since the weather that night was so nice. We arrive at Brassaii Lounge, only to find a line so long it almost reached the street. “Exclusivity,” I thought. The procession wouldn’t move. There was a group of about 4 people who got so fed up with the wait, they decided to ditch Brassaii Lounge and head over across the street to some other place. We had no choice, it was our friend’s day, and this is where he wanted to stay. While we stood there I watched the bouncers let in parties of 4 or 5, mostly the groups with highly groomed gals and guys. Now, this is not to say that the people I was with were unattractive, it was the opposite, we are a group of young, good looking professionals (tooting). Nonetheless, the only way we were let in (almost forty minutes later) was by making a commitment to order TWO bottles.

Now, I am not opposed to bottle service, I actually prefer it, but all the factors must add up. If I am dropping hundreds of dollars on one night in a lounge or club, I expect to have a damn good time. I want to be able to spot my waitress from afar, so I don’t have to keep making runs to the bar. I need to have some kind of space around my table so that I can shimmy and shake to the music. All these things are prerequisites when it comes to ordering bottle service.

The fact that Brassaii Lounge offered NONE of these features left me feeling like exiting the premises immediately. Sure, the music was decent, like most places, but that wasn’t sufficient. To me, the reclaimed industrial layout of the lounge was overlooked by the overcrowded aspect. I am sure Brassaii would make for a good restaurant, as the seating and design of the venue is amusing, but that isn’t why I visited.

As I stood on the floor trying to dance, I kept getting hit, shoved, and pushed by packs of people. And if that wasn’t enough to make me leave, the line in the bathroom swirled around the lounge and almost out the door. Seeing this, I wasn’t sure what the hype about Brassaii was all about. It was jam-packed, the service was slow, the bouncers were biased, and the bathrooms were beyond filthy. My husband and I lasted one drink; we ended up waiting in line longer than we stayed at the lounge. Both our experiences outside the joint and inside were intolerable. Needless to say, I will not return to Brassaii Lounge on a Saturday night again, not even if I were paid to do so.

Am I the only one with a bad experience at Brassaii Lounge?

As I was tuned into the Food Network on Wednesday watching an episode of Chopped, I saw a commercial for The 17th Annual Gourmet Food and Wine Expo. I felt like the ad was talking specifically to my husband and me, since we love gourmet food and wine. Seeing as we had never been to the Expo, we decided that it was necessary to go. I immediately went to www.foodandwineexpo.ca and ordered two tickets, and right after started to feel a little worried. Being a vegetarian is hard enough when it comes to eating at restaurants; I figured I might be faced with no food choices at the Expo because of my diet. My husband reassured me that, worst case scenario; we would just use the sampling tickets to test wines.

On Friday the 18th, we took the subway to Union station and made our way through the skywalk and into Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Once we got there, checked our coats and got inside we were surrounded by people holding mini wine glasses with “Gourmet Food and Wine Expo 2011” etched on them. So we each grabbed a glass as well and headed to the sampling ticket booth and purchased some tickets. (This reminded me of the “Taste of Chicago,” an annual 10 day festival held at Grant Park, and although admission is free, you still have to buy tickets to sample all sorts of food.)

At the Expo, I sampled white wines from New Zealand, Chile, Portugal, France, California, Spain, South Africa, and Ontario. Almost all the exhibitioners had a decanter or a pitcher filled with water to rinse the guests’ glasses after they sampled wine and a small bucket to discard the dirty water afterwards. There were also rinsing stations scattered around the vicinity.

While I was searching for something to eat, I spotted vegan Chef Dough McNish, making vegan tempeh sliders. I had read about tempeh being a nutritious meat alternative, but have never tried it, so I thought: “hey, vegan, tempeh, slider, 2 tickets, why not?” and gave it a shot. Besides looking like a fish fillet, it tasted delightful, and was filling too. I let my husband (a carnivore at heart) have a bite and even he was crazy about it. I asked the chef a few questions about the slider and where I could buy tempeh from and he was nice enough to answer my inquiries and continue a conversation with me.

This station did it for me, no longer did I feel less fortunate at this event, I felt a sense of comfort, someone was looking out for us vegetarians. My stomach was happy and ready to continue the exploration of the Gourmet Food and Wine Expo. I tried the Appenzeller cheese from Switzerland which was cut up into about 10 little cubes and plastic wrapped in a little bag, for 3 tickets, it was out of this world! I sampled a medley plate of hummus and other dips from the Fontaine Sante station, one of the featured sponsors, and even though I make my own hummus at home, I actually enjoyed this brand. My husband savored caviar from the Caspian Sea, a scallop presented beautifully in its shell and other meat varieties.

After a few hours of food tasting and finishing our tickets, we stopped at the LCBO inside the Expo, purchase three bottles of wine and headed out. As we were walking, this lady started talking to us, (Canadians are so friendly) asking us how we enjoyed the show and began telling us that she comes every year. She mentioned that she tried the Kobe beef, and had a lesson, accompanied by tasting of French wines at the LCBO. Because this was our first year, these were things that we missed; we stumbled inside the Gourmet Food and Wine Expo with no experience, no direction. We had no idea what would be offered at the Expo, and although we picked up a guide when we walked in, our mistake was we didn’t actually take time to look at it.

Knowing what I know now about the annual Expo, I understand that I have to be prepared next time I go. I (and everyone else planning on going to the Gourmet Food and Wine Expo) must do my research before I march in; find out who the exhibitors are, where their stations are located, and in what order I want to sample them. The guide and website offer a floor plan, along with a list of exhibitors, but they are on separate pages. I think it would be helpful to have a floor plan on the website that is enabled with a mouse over hover box, such as Lightbox, so when you scroll over, say station 216, a little bubble lists the name of the vendor next to the location, without going to another webpage. This would make it easier on the user, saving them time instead of finding a vendor from the list, then searching for their location on the floor plan.

Overall, I had a great experience at The 17th Annual Gourmet Food and Wine Expo, and will certainly return next year. I am looking forward to experiencing exquisite food and delicious drinks. Hopefully, the team takes my suggestion and transforms the floor plan into something more interactive and user friendly. Until next year, cheers!

The Gourmet Food and Wine Expo took place this past weekend, (November 17 – 20, 2011), at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building. In its 17th year, this weekend affair is every (wannabe) food and drink connoisseurs dream! With dozens upon dozens of vendors, you are free to taste test liquors, wines, and beers, as well as gourmet cheeses, dishes and sandwiches.

I attended the event on Friday evening alongside two friends. Admittedly, I was unaware that such an event existed but after an invite by a friend and his positive feedback from his experience last year, I decided to attend. After paying for my ticket online, ($18 with a $1.50 service fee or $20 at the door) and for coat check, ($2.75), I was headed towards the main site. Seeing as it was a 19+ event, I was initially surprised that no one had checked our identification as we had entered the Expo. (Police and security personnel were located throughout the venue keeping an eye on the crowd during the night.) Once entering, souvenir glasses marked with the GFWE logo were supplied for use for the night. (Rinse stations were placed around the convention centre to avoid mixing your malt beer with Portuguese red wine. Some vendors had rinse stations as well.)

The currency of the Gourmet Food and Wine Expo is ‘sample tickets’, which are sold in a sheet of 20 worth $20. Each vendor decides the cost of their sample, (anywhere from one to six sample tickets.) Most beverages range from one to three sample tickets, where food samples tend to range from three to six tickets. The GFWE recommends a purchase of two sheets or $40 worth of tickets to be able to thoroughly participate in this taste extravaganza. With 40 tickets, you will have more than enough of the Gourmet Food and Wine Expo’s currency to be able to sip, taste, and enjoy the event to the fullest!

If you’re planning to attend the Expo in the years to come, a word to the wise, be prepared! The GFWE is not in its 17th year by fluke. The number of patrons there on Friday night was astonishing. Being that the Metro Toronto Convention Centre is quite large, it is hard to imagine it so full of people that it is hard to move. It was. It took a lap around the site, losing my friends in the crowd and maneuvering around herds of patrons to get my bearings. After forty-five minutes of fighting through the crowds and a lap around the vendors, my friends and I had decided to just dive in to our taste testing!

The most difficult part of the night was, undoubtedly, deciding what to try! Just imagine it… you are standing in wine, beer, and food heaven. What do you do? It took us roughly two hours to get through our first 20 tickets due to the crowds and the overwhelming number of choices present. My ‘team’ of friends and I had made the conscience decision to make this as adventurous of a night as possible for our taste buds. I had encouraged my friends to try wine, (split decision), while I had re-attempted a cider beer, (surprisingly delicious), and we all had sampled edible shooters, (a mini ice cream cup shooter of sugary goodness.) Keeping with the theme of a taste bud adventure, we also agreed to try a sample of duck served from Brassaii restaurant and lounge, (previously reviewed by my friend and colleague Summer Fanous). Again, I was not disappointed by this delicious dish accented with thinly sliced beets.

For me, the notable participants of the Gourmet Food and Wine Expo were:

Masi – Bello Ovile

Rarely faltering a step, Masi has created another velvety red wine full of blueberry, liquorice, and vanilla.

Big Shott's Edible Shooters

Delicious and fun, this shot cup can be filled with whatever liquor your choose. Maybe a New Years Eve must-have?

Mount Gay Rum

Barbados’ “rum that invented rum” was so flavourful and aromatic; it is surely a cocktail in itself.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey

It’s no secret that I am a whiskey girl but I often joke that Jack and I broke up a long time ago. On the other hand, with this incredible flavour of Tennessee Honey, I think Jack and I can kiss and make up. We may even elope.

The Gourmet Food and Wine Expo is a very hot attraction – and it is clear why. For the cost of an evening of dinner and drinks at a restaurant, ($40-$70), you can have an evening of several tantalizing miniature meals and a dozen different drinks to choose from. The atmosphere is lively, full of lounge music and live music, celebrity chefs, and a Food Network kitchen set up for cooking how-to’s and competitions.

The downfall of the event lies in the initial crowd. Obviously a testament to their success, the large crowd does make navigating the venue difficult. (On a side note, I was very happy to see so many Mo-vember mustaches during the night!)

A recommendation for anyone who wishes to attend next year: visit the Expo well prepared.
Wear something comfortable on your feet, (who needs heels in that crowd?)
Do your homework. A little preliminary research to familiarize yourself with the vendors and the shows presented will go a long way.
Subway down! The Expo is accessible via Union Station and a short walk through the Skywalk. There is no reason to drink and drive.

And next year, I will make the time to spend an entire day enjoying the event as opposed to just one evening. There is so much to see, do, and taste! A full day of food and drink is needed for any glutton like me!

If your desire is to have the wedding of your dreams and have little time to make every tiny decision then you better have back up. You might consider hiring wedding planners to help with the details. Or you can call party genius Ramy Sallal, he will turn your vision into reality. Ramy is also the managing partner at the Bellagio Boutique Event Venue and he insures that he will meet your requests and make an impact on your wedding guests. No matter your demand, he is the man who can make it happen. At the Bellagio Boutique Event Venue, you have three rooms and a variety of food to choose from, anything to fit your needs.

From antipasto bars

antipasto bar at the bellagio

to fruit tables,

fruit table

to Saganaki stations,

your taste buds and patrons will thank you for the flavorful abundance provided for their enjoyment. Perhaps wedding cake isn’t enough, and you are looking for something extra, if so, the late night stations might be of interest. If you have a sweet tooth, the Nutella station might be for you,

nutella/crepe station

prepared with crepes, paired with fresh fruit, and presented by the Bellagio staff. Or if sweets aren’t your thing and prefer a salty snack, the Shawerma station might hit the spot.

shawerma

The waiters slicing meat or chicken and stuffing it into pita bread will sure turn your guests’ heads.

Now that the food sector has been covered, I will share with you the décor aspect of the Sala Bellagio room at the Bellagio Boutique Event Venue. The layout of the room is impressive, when entering through the main doors; you are faced with a lobby area that has two bars parallel to one another at opposite sides of the room. This part can be configured to your taste. Two winding stair cases lead up to the top level where there is another bar and a balcony with a view to the hall. There is also a section of seating which serves as a pleasant backdrop for wedding photographs.

Imagine the heavy silk curtains that flank the entrance of the hall momentarily close and reopen. The happy couple stands on the balcony, waving to their guests as they cheer them in. They each walk down their separate staircase, meet in the middle, join hands and walk in together. Talk about picture perfect.

So instead of losing your mind and wasting or wasting your time with every element at your wedding let the Bellagio Boutique Event Venue do all the work for you! Check out their website http://www.bypeterandpauls.com or call Ramy at 416-410-3690 ext 638 and tell him Summer Fanous sent you!

With 3,500 seats flanking the burgundy and golden walls, patrons purchase tickets that ultimately do support and continue to develop the arts.
The first of a five-concert festival was held at Massey Hall was on June 14, 1894. This historical hall was built in honor of industrial baron Hart Massey’s son, Albert Massey. Hart Massey intended that the “spacious, substantial and comfortable” hall would be used to “aid in the development of the arts,” as well as be a place “where public meetings, conventions, musical and other entertainments,” could take place.

Not only has this concert hall been around for over 100 years, but it has hosted hundreds of performers throughout the century. With 3,500 seats flanking the burgundy and golden walls, patrons purchase tickets that ultimately do support and continue to develop the arts. Not only did Hart Massey’s intention come to life, it’s safe to say that millions of people have breathed life, art, and history into Massey Hall.

As a new resident of Toronto, it is important for me to experience the history of the city. Massey Hall was one of my must go-to places on my list that I had to check off. It was a spontaneous decision to go see Bill Maher live. I saw an ad on the internet saying that he was going to be at Massey Hall, so I placed my order over the phone, turns out, the two tickets I purchased were the last pair left. Once I arrived at the box office and picked up my tickets I went downstairs to the concession and bar area. I ordered an alcoholic beverage that came in a plastic cup; there are non-alcoholic drinks as well. The concession area also has chips, cookies and other snacks. (FYI, it’s cash only, and there are no ATM’s there.)

As I made my way up four sets of staircases that seemed to drag on, and made it to my chair, I realized that every seat was occupied with fans of Maher. I was sitting way at the top in the gallery section. Before the show started, I looked directly down and saw Maher behind the curtains. When he came on stage I had a pretty good view of him, despite the location of my seat. At one point in the show a fan in the gallery yelled out to Maher that she couldn’t hear him, he then made a joke about how Canadians are so polite, saying she went fifteen minutes before she mentioned it. He then requested that the audio be turned up; the acoustics at Massey Hall really surprised me. His voice was crisp and clear, it sounded like he was sitting right next to me, making me laugh.

As soon as the show was over, the lights turned back on, and the crowds made their way down the stairs. Most of Maher’s jokes were some I had heard on TV before, but that didn’t matter. It was worth seeing him live because it gave me the chance to go to Massey Hall. I was able to enjoy the architectural and historical details of the venue cross it off my list. This doesn’t mean that I won’t return, only that I must continue Searching Toronto.

Mark McEwan’s ONE Restaurant is located in the very posh Yorkville neighborhood in Toronto, and is frequented by locals as well as celebrities such as Julia Roberts. The mood exuded at ONE is that of a sexy, elegant, warm and inviting setting. The service at ONE is impeccable, the servers, waiters, and hosts are finely dressed and attentive to the wishes of the guests.

After being seated, dinner service starts with the server bringing a basket of freshly baked breads around and allows you to choose the type you prefer. The olive bread is unbelievably appetizing, but you should try a different kind each time he comes around. The list of options at ONE are suitable for vegetarians and meat eaters. Every course brought out is not only worthy of presentation points, but a show of appreciation to the chef for the delightful flavors. The menu has a page designated for specialty drinks and wines by the glass, and there is also an extensive wine list, if you prefer a fine bottle instead.

Astounding food and wine, excellent service, and a lovely ambiance is what makes ONE this month’s featured restaurant. Experience it for yourself, make your reservations today.
